GUIDED DRIFT BOAT TRIPS
Fly fishing from a drift boat offers an experience unlike any other, providing access to waters that are virtually impossible to reach without one. As the boat glides downstream, it opens up sections of the river that are untouched by anglers on foot or those fishing from the shore. These hidden pockets of water hold some of the best fishing opportunities, where fish are less pressured and more likely to take a fly. A drift boat allows you to explore these remote areas with ease, turning what might have been a challenging trek into a smooth, flowing journey.
The drift boat is the ideal platform for casting a fly rod. With its stability and open layout, it gives anglers plenty of space to cast in any direction, whether you’re targeting deep pools, riffles, or tight spots along the bank. The boat also allows for precision fishing, as the guide can position it perfectly, holding along cutbanks or seams, ensuring that every cast has the best chance of success. It eliminates the hassle of wading through deep water or fighting through brush, leaving you to focus on what matters—catching fish and enjoying the experience.
Another advantage of fishing from a drift boat is avoiding the crowded, noisy scenes often found on lakes. Out on the river, it's just you, your guide, and the rhythm of the water. The natural beauty surrounding you becomes part of the experience, from the soft sounds of the river to the wildlife that often graces the banks. Every trip feels like an adventure, where you can truly disconnect from the world and immerse yourself in the serenity and excitement of the river.
Shortly after I got out of the army, my father purchased a drift boat. It was a blast to fish out of, and we had some great days on the water. However, he never mastered the skill of rowing the boat. Adding to that, only a couple of my friends were able to row, so I ended up being the guide by default on most of our trips. Which ultimately did not matter. I enjoy running the oars and putting people on fish almost as much as casting a rod. However, nowadays, those same buddies have wives, kids, and full-time jobs, which makes it nearly impossible for the three of us to carve out a full day for fishing.
So, how do you stay on the water when you have a guide boat and your friends are to busy to fish with you? Start a guide service... It’s been a long journey, but that’s how my guiding experience started, and now I’m taking it to the next level with Red Cedar Fly Fishing.
